"Pancake Party keeps farmers in mind"

Villagers in Brompton tucked into around 400 pancakes with a clear conscience on Shrove Tuesday. All the ingredients had been carefully chosen to promote a fair deal for farmers locally and around the world.

The Pancake Party was organised by Brompton Ecumenical Youth Fellowship (BEYF) a group for young people supported by churches in Brompton. Youngsters served around 80 guests before tucking into the pancakes themselves, at the event held in Brompton Methodist Church.

Rev,d Rachel Parkinson, minister at Brompton Methodist church and one of the event organisers, said, "Pancakes proved the perfect dish to promote the cause of farmers seeking a fair deal for their produce. We used local ingredients first so that included eggs and milk for the pancakes and cheese and butter for the fillings. Other ingredients for the fillings all carried the Fairtrade mark, including chocolate, bananas, sugar, and jam. Our pancakes were delicious but they also had a serious message; buy local and buy Fairtrade."

The event raised £130, half of which the young people have donated to the charity Christian Aid. BEYF are grateful to local farmers Cath and Nev Kitching, and Chris and Colin Donald, for supplying milk and eggs. Donations of Fairtrade goods were received from the Co op store in Romanby and Sainsburys in Northallerton.
